Kaiten's Guide to Vending, Selling, and Making Profit
From my experiences on the Apoline Server
Feel free to add your own tips. These are tips Ive found useful in gaining customers quickly and effectively (doesn't always work, but it sure helps out loads).
Introduction.
Keep in mind when people go shopping around, most of the time they don't 'peruse'. They're searching for something SPECIFIC. The whole point in you sticking up your shop is to make money, sell your items - and therefore you want the person looking for that SPECIFIC.. say, FIGHTER item.. to come to your FIGHTER shop. Even if you don't have the item! They might see something they like WHILE they are looking for the other item. You shouldn't be trying to attract Archers to a Fighter shop - you'll only make them mad and they wont even consider your items.
So the entire time, you're trying to gather specific people. You are not trying to lure every single person. Nay, that is impossible. You're trying to lure these people looking for specific items. These are your best bet. Because these people will be looking for specific shops, you DO have a chance of not being one of those shops (A fighter looking for fighter stuff wont stop at an archer shop), but you WILL gather all the people of that specific group to you.
With these tips in mind, you will be able to effectively sell more, and quicker.
1) Shop Titles
Title it what you're selling - Whatever your selling.. put that in your title. No one likes to see "Fighters Galore!" and take a peek in there to see loads of archer stuff. Plus, no archer will come to your shop because you say you're selling fighter.
If you think being sly will do it.. - For those of you who only put.. for say "~^.^~" as your entire title: I personally find these annoying. No one knows what you're selling! I asked some of my friends and they said they IGNORE these shops because they are usually a waste of time and effort.
2) Shop Content
There are three ways to fill your shop
- By Type
- One of each
- Randomly
By Type - Selling ALL of one class items, all necklaces, all rings, or all of any particular item at ONE time. This makes titling your shop easy, as if you're selling only dusts, you can title it "Dusts".
The Good: Ive actually found this the most effective, as you can sell all of one type very quickly.
The Bad: The only drawback is you lose everyone who is NOT looking for those items.
One of Each - Some people find it more profitable to put up one of each item. If they have a lot of things for all classes, they put up one for each class, and restock whichever gets sold.
The Good: You're guaranteed to have at least one of each class check your shop.
The Bad: I personally haven't found this to be very effective, because if a fighter is looking for boots, and you've got a hat in your shop: no sale.
Random - This is erratic selling usually mean as 'inventory cleaning'. I AVOID THESE SHOPS. Why? Because who knows what junk they have in their storage. These shops usually either sell undesirable items for too much, or desired items for ridiculously high prices
The Good: Sometimes you end up selling stuff you thought previously unsellable.
The Bad: Selling is erratic, no guaranteed sales.
3) Time
There are several ways to sell within time periods:
- Overnight
- Hourly
- Desperate
Overnight - This usually involves setting up shop overnight with a full round of things and leaving it open all night.
The Good: You don't have to deal with it, just go to sleep, wake up, and hopefully you have some money.
The Bad: The only draw back is if you have a small shop (5 items), you end up wasting valuable time. If you have a larger shop (10+), you can sell much yes, but only if your computer doesn't blow up from sheer strain...
- (Believe it or not: setting up shop overnight causes your computer to constantly be loading and unloading the people passing, this causes your computer to work harder, produce more heat, and can easily overheat computers that aren't.. well, the best of the best.)
Hourly - This requires you to check it hourly and restock when needed. You can also find out what sells for what, and drop prices when needed.
The Good: The good part to this is you can constantly restock and lower prices when needed, so you're always on top of things.
The Bad: The only problem with this is many people don't have the patience to use a whole day checking it hourly.
- If your computer begins to overheat: you can point a fan at it or stop vending til it cools down.
Desperate - This is usually last minute desperate vending when you really need the money or have no more spots open. I don't know of any particular good points it adds, but these people usually sell it for cheap or far too much. The ones that sell it for cheap get money fast, but lose money in the long run. The ones who sell it far too much have to wait longer and sometimes don't sell anything at all.
The Good: SOMETIMES you can get quick sales, if you sell your items for the cheapest.
The Bad: Most people avoid last minute shops. This is because some people think "I need money! Ill sell a silver necklace for 25s" when its clearly not worth that. Thus Apolinians learn to not check these shops. If they do, its usually just because they are bored or curious as to what this person is selling for ridiculously high prices.
4) Prices
- Armors
- Weapons/Shields
- Necklaces, Rings, Earrings
- Miscellaneous
Keep this in mind ALWAYS:
Fighters - Str or End
Clerics - End or Spr
Archers - Str or Dex (new archers may mistakenly buy spr items, thinking it adds to crit)
Mages - Int, End, sometimes Spr
Armor - Keep in mind here that special armor is usually desired of each. Low stat greens wont sell for much, most likely just the smith price or just below it. Armor with large numbered stats on them should sell for more, but too much of the wrong kind and no one will buy. Keep the above list in mind and you'll do fine.
Other than having these stats, you shouldn't add more. If a fighter shirt has +15 STR and +15 END with +15 INT, practically ignore the INT, because it wont effect your sales. Jacking up the price for a stat on something for a class that doesn't need it will only result in you never selling the item.
Weapons and Shields - Weapons with good stats are in high demand. The same rules apply as above, but players may request DEX in more things (as Dex increases Eva and Aim, its good for strong hits and more of the fiends missing on you). Usually if its enhanced even slightly - people will pay a bit more for it. But notice things lv 1-3 don't do as good. Too common. Unless it has godly stats (really high, in other words: a lv 40 shirt having STR +25 is godly), then it should be priced pretty nominally.
Necklaces, Rings, and Earrings - Necklaces oddly enough.. don't sell for much. Don't ask more than a few silver, unless they are the really rare ones. Its recommended you NPC the regular ones and sell the rare ones, if you don't use them.
Rings as well don't sell for much unless they are rare too. Rare being the quest rings, like Beast, or Mini Dragon ring.. The others don't sell for much. Its recommended you NPC the regular rings and try to sell the rare ones, if you don't use them.
Miscellaneous - Everything else.. just go by public prices. Copper Ore prices fluctuate, as do Silver Ore and special gems and rubies and such. Stones sell well, the higher the Tier, th higher they sell for. Just look at the prices around, find the lowest, and sell em for a few copper less, and you will do just fine. Keep the other tips here in mind, and you'll still sell these items.
5) Location, Location, Location
This only has three points:
- Groups
- Spaces
- Crowds
Groups - This being.. if you're selling stones, try to sell them where everyone else has chosen to: By the smith. No one will look for stones elsewhere. They'll expect stones at the smith, so they will only look for stones at the smith.
The Good: You know where to put your shop and people know where to find you
The Bad: Since everyone else is set up here, theres high competition. Best bet is to make your price the lowest here.
Spaces - Do NOT set up your shop RIGHT next to someone else, when you can put it in an open space. People have a hard time clicking the individual shops, and will give up on looking at yours if they're having a hard time clicking on it. Put your shop in a relatively open space, where its easy to click and read your title.
The Good: People can click your store and read your title.
The Bad: People don't go much into the sparse parts of towns. So make sure you're still close to other shops.
Crowds - Crowds are BAD. This invades your space and makes it hard to select your shop. Think about the crowd up by Shutian.. Its hard to click the right shop because they're so close. Try to avoid these thick crowds.
The Good: Avoiding crowds ensures people find, see, and click your shop.
The Bad: If you go too far, your shop wont be seen. Find a mid-way between open spaces and crowds.
In your spare time..
- If you're going to be away for more than 15 minutes: Set up vendor real quick with the items you have on hand. You don't have to worry much about the prices: just set them how you think. Reasonable prices will attract more. This works best in or around the towns (vending in a dungeon would only get you those few dungeon people, IF they decide to walk past you or look).
- Instead of logging out for a few minutes: Set up Vendor. While logging out, yeah, keeps you safe in dangerous areas, or you think it makes your computer run less. The few minutes actually don't do much for your computer. Just set up your vendor, and don't make your computer have to close and reopen Fiesta.
- If you've nothing to sell: Look around in the shops. Sometimes you'll find something nice that you would like, and profit everyone. (If you're looking for a specific thing, I recommend you click a shop, move the vendor box to the top left, and the inventory box to the top right. Move your camera to an aerial view. Simply click from shop to shop and only look for your item. Power go through all the shops. Quick, easy, but I tend to not find my items..)
